Obituary of Margie Applegate



Margie Lillian Applegate, daughter of Roy and Ruby (Rose) Houghton, was born February 19, 1920, in Brownsville, Texas, and passed away at the Brookdale Senior Living Center in McCook, Nebraska, on January 4, 2017, at the age of 96.

Margie grew up in Norton County, Kansas, and attended county schools. On September 27, 1941, she married Wayne Applegate in Quinter, Kansas. Margie was a military wife and they made their permanent home in Norton County. Margie's husband, Wayne, passed away September 22, 1999. Margie continued to make her home in Norton, and in later years she lived in the Logan Manor in Logan, Kansas, before moving to McCook.

Margie was a member of the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren in Norton County and the Coe-Z Club. She enjoyed gardening and her chickens, making hand-made soaps, cooking and baking, and was a gifted seamstress especially with quilting.

Survivors include: two sons, Jim Applegate, and Stan, and wife, Carolyn Applegate, all of Norcatur, Kansas; four grandchildren, Amanda (Steve) Davis, Kelli (Justin) Pachner, Jamie (Jim) Ulrich, and Melinda Elzinga; 11 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Francis and Robert Houghton, two sisters, Helen Stevenson and Evelyn Lechner, and one grandson, Jeff.
